Hello Jeff,

I myself am anavid athlete and weight lifter. Currently I play college golf and have gotten onto a pretty intense training regiment that isnt really related to golf(just to do it).

I have been working with a strength and and conditioning coach and my cousin that is a body builder and have gotten a pretty routine and advice. Your routine of traing a different body part each day. I have never tried to run 12 hours after, I usually do it right before or after a workout but that sounds like a good thing to possibly try out.

When it comes to suuplements I have never been too big on them. The only one I take is one my uncle(a triathlete) reccommended. It is called Recoverrite by Hammer Nutrition. I highly reccommend it. The best part is that it is approved by the ADA so is good for diabetics to take. I helps me to maintain focus and energy. Other than that I try to eat right. I found that is the best thing for me. I try to stay very well hydrated and eat some kind of long lasting carbs before I work out. If I am in a long session or golf tournament I like to eat Nature Valley bars which help me maintain my blood sugar and energy.

I will try to post a list of other foods and whatnot that help me with my workouts.

I am interested in finding other athletes who lift free weight, use cable machines, weighted machines, etc. and can share the lifting routines, exercise tips, etc. with other diabetic athletes, new, old and young.

I train different body parts each day of the week but in a systematic manner. For example I perform 1. Chest/Back/Calves , 2 Biceps/Triceps/Midsection, 3 Rotors/Shoulders/Trapezius, 4 Legs/Forearms, 1-2 days cardio then repeat the next week.

I usually try and schedule my cardio workouts, skip rope, exercycle, treadmill, cardio glyde, stair climber, x-cross country skiing, in-line skating, jog/walk/run, etc. 10-12 hrs. opposite my weight lifting routines. This usually helps reduce the lactic acid buildup between and after workouts.

I have to use a lot of supplements to get trhough each workout successfully or else it's crash and burn time, LOL. No glucose, no muscle glycogen, no can continue, ooops. I use a lot of caffeine based on mg/kg. of body weight to help me recover cognitively if I have a low blood glucose and to help with my respiratory sucking wind, needs.

If there are others out there who have valuable input, please free to give hints, tips, and techniques that have proven results. I'll try and post a list of resources I am using, FYI if this is ok.

I try to maintain my physical body based on scripture. The lesson and advice is not new. I also combine my biblical studies with my workouts using mp3 players so I can share the meat and potatoes of scripture.

Hello all. I've only been insulin dependent since 1990 and average 5-7 shots per day since then. I was into distance running when I came down with diabetes and working as a rehabilitation consultant for workman's comp., personal injury, etc. etc. I went from 160 lbs. to 185 lbs. body weight in 3 days after they put me on insulin. I've since then trained myself in weight training and cross training as well as a few outdoor recreational activities.

I take a long list of pharmaceutical grade supplements along with my daily dietary management, mostly beans, lentils, brown rice, split peas, lean meats for nitrogen based amino acids, (i.e., tuna in water, halibut, salmon, lean chicken or turkey, lean ham or other beef, etc.) I have some advanced neuropathy (i.e., nerve damage for pain, hot cold, etc.) and that is when I started taking some of the more complex supplements. Since then my sense of hot and cold and pain receptors are returning.

I use enough calories to account for my workouts plus daily physical sedentary and light duty activities. I use BCAA Branch Chain Amino Acid Supplements as these appear to be the most predominant in muscle building and Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate Amino acids for cardio vascular support. I usually mix in Whey Protein in moderate amounts (10 to 20 grams) before and after a workout. I also take nicain the type that makes me flush, dialates my blood vessels and keeps my blood pressure and triglycerides in control. I take a chromium polynicotinate, boron, calcium citrate, mag., zinc, vit e, etc. the list is pretty long. I take about 1/4 of an aspirin to thin the blood before my cardio routines.

The Alpha Lipoic Acid and Grape Seed P.E. with Evening Primrose Oil has reversed much of the neuropathy problems I have struggled with for 3 years. I used to have access to sci-med for abstract research but not any more. I use a few advanced sports training books for my weight training, personal charts, routines, etc.

I also have had 3 passing out incidents due to low blood glucose in the last 2 yrs. I started taking the supplements since the passing out incidents and have less difficulty. Summer times are easier to workout and the lower temperatures here in Alaska are a blessing to my heat intolerances. I also have been taking a mixture that, is questionable, but seems to work, of sodium bicarb and sodium chloride in a 2 litre bottle to sip on when I am working out strenously for 1-3 hrs. pretty much non stop. I have to check blood pressures to make sure I am not running high between workouts.

I'm trying to get by on no glucose checks as I don't have the money or resources to check like I used to. Usually I can tell about where my glucose levels are by how often I have to use the bathroom (3-4 times in an hr. is 350-500 bg, 2 times an hr is 200-350, 1 time per hr. 150-200 bg) based on averages. If my muscles are out of whack or there is no muscular intensity when I try to lift and I am tired, it usually goes with a low bg. 60-80 range. I use powdered non-fat milk mixed with olive, canola, safflower oils to slow the metabolization of lactose into glucose. You can measure the amount of powdered milk mixed in 2 litre's of liquid and take a simple piece of duct tape on the side of the bottle ( I reuse my diet pop bottles from the grocery store for such purposes) to mark off the grams of carbs per 1/8, 1/6, or 1/4 of a bottle, etc. It is a rough guestimate but seems to work pretty reliably.

If you know some of the exercise requirements of your activity and kcal consumption per hr. for the specific activity, then it is a bit easier to predict how many grams of carbs, fats, proteins you need while exercising. I get some of my glucosamine from vetrinary science, LOL horse feed that I mix in proportion for a 220 lb. person compared to a 1000 lb. horse, do the math, along with my MSM in the evenings a couple of times per week for ligament and joint support.

If my health stabilizes by June, that is a good goal for me. Remember to keep your diabetes suppmentation simple, organized and efficient. Logs and charts to track your supplementation and exercise outcomes can help you make quick and effective adjustments from week to week. Patience is a virtue. Most of the vitamins and minerals have to be metabolized with food in order to work correctly so I time the meals with the supplements.

JesusGOD Bless!
Respectfully Submitted
Jeff

Hey Florian,
As time goes on and I learn more and more my supplement regamin has changed slightly. I'm not longer doing baby aspirin (doc says there's no point given my young age. Though this past week I have added B-complex and have been feeling great (could also be the phase of my program I'm in) and when I don't think I have enough fish in my diet an Omega supplement.
Immediately post workout tends to be chocolate milk or if I don't have it that day then at least an apple or banana to hold me over till I get home for a real meal.
I guess for everyone it's a personal choice. I totally agree with trying to get everything you need from whole natural foods but sometimes life just doesn't allow that (lack of finances or time).
As for my other ergogenic aid ... quite simple, caffeine. I've cut it out of my daily life so that I get huge benefits from it during endurance training and events.

Take care and train smart!

Hi,

I don't know the answer, but my daughter is a nurse, and she has a lot's of patients with kidney failure because they were popping up too many supplements.
I have another doctor friend and she says, she do not take any supplements or vitamins since she believes that the body cannot absorb them from pills.
I am as guilty as anybody else and my cupboard is full of pills.....
What if we try green smoothies instead (try google)?

Thanks again Leanne. Do you add or eliminate supplements, vitamins, or minerals over time? I forgot to include a lo dose aspirin in my list. I have the black and blues to prove it :) I recently started taking a Boost Gluco Control after my weight training workouts. I do it as a hold me over when I leave the Fitness Center to drive home for lunch plus it's loaded with protein and I wanted to see if it might help to provide the building blocks to make some lean muscle. I read recently that just plain old milk is as good as the whey protein shakes after a workout.

May I ask what is the other ergogenic aid that you take.

Whoa supplements galore ... wait a sec, I take a bunch too ...hhhhmmmmmm

I take a few supplements but try to get what I need from food whenever possible.
I take Vit D, Calcium, Baby Asprin, oil of oregano and a multi vitamin. I use a little bit of protein powder on some days, have some Salba when I remember and a little Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer for those days (especially when traveling) when I know I'm not getting the proper nutrition and Vega EFA oil when I feel so inclined. I also use Glucerna products when traveling to places when I don't necessarily know what's in the food or if I'll have easy access to food.
I can tell the days that I don't take my multi/Vit D/Baby Asprin/Cal ... I feel just a little sluggish, could just be a coincidence because on the days I forget it's usually because I'm not feeling hot in the first place.
I take the Oil of Oregano pretty much daily but also whenever I get a tickle in my throat or feel like I'm going to come down with something.
None of the supplements have an adverse effect on my BS control that I've noticed. As for performance, I use my daily regimen plus another ergogenic aid to help with that (it's legal and approved).

A little background about my training, 8-9 workouts a week. Combination of weights, yoga, and cardio. Paddling again come January.

See you on the water!

Hi DESA Members,

I have been reading about vitamins and supplements that are recommended for people with diabetes. I would like to ask if there are any DESA members here who are taking certain vitamins and supplements every day and what are the benefits that you see in the way you feel, blood sugar control, or in the performance of the exercise/sport that you do to stay healthy and fit.

I take a multi vitamin, super B complex, vitamin D, alpha lipoic acid, magnesium, chromium picolinate, krill oil, and glucosamine chondroitin MSM. There are a few others that are recommended for active people with diabetes but I'm trying to leave some room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner :) Are you taking any that I am not? Why?

I do 60 minutes of weight resistance training and 30 minutes of cardio twice a week for all the benefits that these exercises provide and in addition I am trying to add a few pounds of lean muscle. Any tips or suggestions on how to increase calories to gain some healthy weight and control blood sugar at the same time would be greatly appreciated.
